Why do I need compost?

​

Some garden soils can be good for growing plants, fruits and vegetables; however they can vary considerably (even within the same garden) and very few gardeners are lucky enough to have perfect soil. Adding compost or a soil improver helps to provide the right growing conditions, which will ensure you achieve bigger and healthier results.

Choosing the right compost is essential to get the most out of your plants/fruit/vegetables, but the ingredients that make up different composts can vary dramatically. For the best results it is wise to use a ‘fit for purpose’ compost, which has been tailor-made for the job in hand.

Why can’t I use my own garden soil to pot up plants?

Garden soil doesn’t hold as much water as a good potting compost and so you will have to water more often or your plants will suffer. Soil also lacks essential nutrients and so plant growth will be slower. Garden soil may also harbour pests and disease.

 

Original compost

Traditional blend with rich dark peat, tried and tested by experienced gardeners, ideal for all gardening uses. Contains seaweed, a rich source of trace elements that stimulate plant growth

For containers: Part fill the new pot with compost, place the plant in the centre and top up with compost. Firm lightly, water thoroughly and let drain.

​

For hanging baskets: Line the basket if required with moss or other liner and part fill with compost. Plant up with trailing plants towards the edge and upright plants in the middle. Top up with compost, firm lightly, water thoroughly and let drain.

For seedlings: Fill the seed tray with Levington Original Multi Purpose Compost and level off. Firm lightly and water. Sow seeds following pack instructions.

For cuttings: Push cuttings into the compost. Firm lightly, water thoroughly and let drain. Keep moist and in a warm place out of direct sunlight.

For beds and borders: Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Part fill the hole with equal quantities of soil and compost. Ensure the plant is at the same level as in the pot.

How to use

Firstly, remove all weeds from the bed or border. When the soil is moist, spread a layer or Levington Water Saving Decorative Bark 5cm (2") deep around the plants.

For pathways: Levington Water Saving Decorative Bark provides a stable surface and safe footing, even during rain. Spread a layer 5cm (2") deep over the weed free surface. Covers an area 2.5m × 0.5m at 5cm.

For beds and borders: Remove all weeds from the bed or border. Apply when the soil is moist. Spread a layer of Levington® Water Saving Decorative Bark 5cm (2") deep around plants.

 

Top soil

Manure

Levington Peat Free Organic Blend Farmyard Manure is a rich blend of concentrated manures with composted matter that improves poor soil. Made with sustainably sourced green compost, Levington Organic Blend Manure contains Humus, which increases the yield of your crops.

 

How to use

Soil improvement: For general soil improvement, fork a 2.5cm (1") layer of Levington Organic Blend Soil Conditioner into the top 10cm (4") of soil.

Before sowing and planting: Fork in Levington Organic Blend Farmyard Manure to the soil surface and to the bottom of the planting holes, drills and trenches for an abundant crop of flowers, fruit and vegetables.

​

For vegetable plots and allotments: In spring spread a 5-8cm (2-3") layer of Levington Organic Blend Farmyard Manure over soil and dig in before sowing or planting. On heavy clay soils repeat when winter digging.

​

Established beds and Borders: Spread a 5-8cm (2-3") layer of Levington Organic Blend Farmyard Manure beneath the branches of roses, shrubs, trees and bushes. Allow a 5-8cm (2-3") gap around stems. This 100% organic mulch will help the soil retain moisture, suppress weeds and release food to surrounding plants.

Plant invigoration: In spring, apply a layer of Levington Organic Blend Farmyard Manure approximately 5-8cm (2-3") deep onto the clean soil around established herbaceous flowers, shrubs, fruit and vegetables and work into the soil surface. It will add nutrients for better yields and vital plant development.

​

For new lawns: Spread a layer of Levington Organic Blend Farmyard Manure 5-8cm (2-3") deep onto clean soil and dig into the top 10-15cm (4-6") of soil for improved grass seed germination and quicker establishment of turf.

 

Soil conditioner

 

An organic peat-free soil conditioner, high in nutrients that improves poor soil structure

Levington Organic Blend Soil Conditioner can be used also as mulch to suppress weeds.

 

For sandy soils: Levington Organic Blend Soil Conditioner will improve the structure of your soil by adding humus to help hold moisture and nutrients.

• For clay soils: On clay soil use Levington Organic Blend Soil Conditioner to improve the drainage, helping excess moisture drain away and leaving your plant roots healthy.

• For weed prevention: For effective weed suppression a minimum of 5cm (2") of Levington Organic Blend Soil Conditioner is required over the flowerbeds or containers. It should be applied to clean soil and maintained once a year.

• For soil improvement: For general soil improvement, fork a 2.5cm (1") layer of Levington Organic Blend Soil Conditioner into the top 10cm (4") of soil.
